San Francisco's Fillmore District has played, does play and will continue to play a vital role in the City's rich fabric. I'm on the board of Urban Solutions, a non-profit that does a lot of work in the district, supporting entrepreneurs in achieving their dreams.
The other night, at 1300 on Fillmore, a way cool restaurant/entertainment venue that pays tribute to the heritage of the district, way cool sisters Melonie and Melorra Green received the Urban Solutions Social Entrepreneurship Award for launching Infin8 Sync, a production and creative events company supporting indie filmmakers and artists.
The 1300 block of Fillmore swings big time. In addition to 1300 on Fillmore, you can find Yoshi's Jazz Club and the Jazz Heritage Center, a part jazz museum, part jazz cultural center, and part jazz art gallery.
I have many fond memories of the Fillmore - aka "The Harlem of the West" - especially going to concerts at Bill Graham's Fillmore Auditorium in the '60's seeing such great acts as Cream, B.B. King, Chambers Brothers, Quicksilver, Big Brother & the Holding Company, Jefferson Airplane and the great Jimi Hendrix who blended rock, blues and jazz - very "Fillmore" was he.
