San Francisco based Twitter is rumored to be considering locating their headquarters at 1355 Market Street (between 9th & 10th) which for years was known as "The Western Furniture Exchange & Merchandise Mart". Built in 1937 this edifice is a magnificent example of Art Deco architecture. Now repositioned as "Market Square" - a multi-use development which will include almost 900,000 square feet of high tech commercial space and 200,000 square feet of quality retail space to be filled with a variety of shops and restaurants intended to serve the ever increasing residential and workforce community in the mid-Market part of town.
Mid-Market was once a vibrant entertainment and arts district but for reasons not the subject of this blog for decades descended into blighted landscape. But as they say "hope springs eternal" and with the efforts of the Mayor's Office of Economic & Workforce Development, the establishment of a Community Benefits District, plans for business tax breaks and brave souls such as Urban Realty, developers of City Place, the soon to be 250,000 square foot retail center (between 5th & 6th) and one of my favorite clients, Pearl's Deluxe Burgers who will soon open at the corner of 6th & Market there is indeed hope!
With this urban development pincer move, westerly up 6th and easterly down 10th, there's good reason for optimism that our mid-Market will regain the position of urban glory it once held!
p.s. and in case you thought you were going to get away without one of my trips down a musical memory lane, you were wrong!
