Meus Urbs , Meus Professio

"My City, My Art" (thank you Babel Fish). Last night I attended a reception at the wonderful Catherine Clark Gallery and it got me thinking about the relationship I have with my city and how, even though in a very small way, by being in retail real estate I am contributing to "painting the canvas" that is San Francisco.

Cities are living, evolving organisms and Minna Street continues to undergo metamorphosis. For years a dowdy transit/freight alley, Catherine made a bold move and opened her gallery in mid-2007 converting what was a garage into a gallery. And last year, Baer-Ridgway opened shop two doors down in a space that I represented.

Minna Street will continue to morph - and soon - as a result of the City exercising its right of eminent domain forcing several businesses to relocate for the Transbay Terminal development. A popular Natoma Street bar will open later this year. And next to that location a long time vacant space will very likely be the new home to one of two restaurant/bars in the same situation.

Last night I attended the reception not only because I wanted to have some fun but also to meet someone and continue the conversation we have been engaged in over the past several weeks regarding the possibility of his leasing space to open a gallery for a very well known artist.

I hope he makes the decision to take the space - not only because leasing retail space is now my livelihood - but also because the aggregation of these businesses will truly turn Minna Street into a vibrant cultural destination.
