Getting out the vote!

The November elections are nigh and it's time to "get out the vote" as were these two committed citizens who leisurely strolled Market Street today on behalf of their District 6 candidate of choice.

In San Francisco, we have 11 Supervisors each representing a geographic area of this this 49 square mile city. It wasn't always such. At one time - in fact, at more than one time - Supervisors were elected "at large" meaning that whoever got the most votes City-wide was elected.

The problem with that was that it left many communities without a voice as to the issues that affected them. The current construct of San Francisco districts has certainly served a purpose. However, it occurs to me that it has led to a less than holistic view of what it will take for the City to thrive and prosper in this new and challenging economic era.

I have been thinking that a "compromise solution" is in order. That would be a hybrid model, where for example, there would be five elected "at large" Supervisors who would be thinking about San Francisco in the context of a competitor in the global economy - and six district Supervisors who would be more focused on retaining the unique character of the City - the character which has and will continue to maintain San Francisco's "world-class city" status. But again, that's just me.

Oh well, I will end this post with another great song - this time by Alvin Lee and Ten Years After. I hope you enjoy.

I guess it's because of the heat wave that those campaigners are in their skivvies!

Look closely Maureen - there were no skivvies involved!
