What I like most about my job is that it gets me out on the street and in the mix where I can meet all sorts of interesting people. One day it's two Anime convention gals (see blog below) and today it was Noah Alper, serial entrepreneur and founder of Noah's Bagels and Bread & Circus.
The missus wanted to go to our local hardware store and combine it with a dog-walk, so I went along. While she went to buy a few things I strolled the pooch and a few storefronts up where there is a Noah's Bagels, I met Noah and his son enjoying a nice rain-free day promoting his new book "Business Mensch: Timeless Wisdom for Today's Entrepreneur"
It's always fun to talk to entrepreneurs. Many of my clients are young entrepreneurs and so it was especially interesting to share some of their experiences with an experienced entrepreneur.
One of the things Noah reflected upon about starting Noah's Bagels was that when he started it people didn't really understand "bagels". Now I know that something is getting lost in translation here but the point he was trying to make (and Noah feel free to jump in if I am wrong) is that when a product or concept is being introduced to the market it is essential that the entrepreneur focuses on educating the consumer as to the benefits of his/her product. The other point made was that you better love what you are doing because you are going to live-and-breathe it if you want it to be successful.
I am sure "Business Mensch" will be an enjoyable read. I've thumbed through the pages found a picture of Noah's father and mentor who is attributed with such notable quotes as "Retail is detail" .. truer words never spoken.
p.s. In my blog I have gotten into the habit of posting songs I like very much.. I always try to make them related to the subject of the blog... sometimes I stretch it... perhaps with this one.. a tribute to the very early Small Faces fronted by Steve Marriott the "Artful Dodger"
